Marine Traffic is a website that shows the location vessels/ships that are equipped with AIS (Automatic Identification System) transponders. AIS is a great navigation and safety system that helps us avoid potential collisions at sea.
AIS is compulsory for ships in Australian water’s and an option for recreational vessels. When integrated into our navigation system it displays ships/vessels on our chart plotter, displaying their name, size, speed, direction and alarms are set to warn of imminent collisions.
Some land based marine AIS Stations are hooked up to the internet allowing websites like Marine Traffic to display the locations and details of AIS equipped vessels world wide whenever they are in locations close to monitored AIS stations. This allows Seabreeze to be tracked, but not always.
